Samsung Series 7 Chronos Review

The Design

The device is thin and light, which you can call this a a mobile computing, however there's still plenty of folks who need a full-featured portable machine. Samsung's Series 7 Chronos is just such a PC, packing an optical drive, numpad and discrete graphics beneath a brushed aluminum façade.

Series 9 is slim at 0.94 inches (24mm) thin, which is .03 inches slimmer than Sony's svelte VAIO S. and at 5.05 pounds (2.29kg), although the device is heavier than the aforementioned 4.4 pound (2kg) Sony.

The laptop's skin is made of several separate sheets of metal and the plastic. You will find a small gaps on either edge where the display bezel meets the lid, plus the metal keyboard deck doesn't fit flush with the plastic bottom, resulting in a protruding ridge of plastic around the palm rest.

The device is wrapped in a beautiful layer of brushed aluminium casings with magnificent keyboard, SuperBright displays, black lid hinge and batteries that last for up to 9 hours per charge. It's a darker shade than the aluminum we're accustomed to, the pewter color giving the impression that the Chronos is wrapped in the stuff usually seen covering high-end kitchen appliances and Doc Brown's favorite time machine. We think it's an appealing package, particularly since you get the luxe appearance of stainless steel without the weight gain.

There is  a texturedand sleek silver Samsung badge on the lid which is solid at the edge to keep the display from bending, and even the centre is firm to protect the screen. A painted logo on the bezel beneath the display and unsightly ATI, Intel and Windows 7 stickers affixed just south of the keyboard.

You will find the power button (chrome) resides above the right side of the grid, and the topside is all posh metal.

The Display

This is the selling point for Chronos Series 7, the device comes with 15.6in machine, the display resolution is 1600 x 900 (which gives multitaskers plenty of screen real estate to play with), offering 300nit brightness, 16 million colors and an anti-reflective screen film and it's driven by an AMD Radeon HD 6570M graphics core. With SuperBright 300nit brightness, 16 million colors and an anti-reflective screen, films and pictures look rich, vivid and crisp, with noticeable improvements in color-depth.

A 15.6” display is embedded into a 15” model. The result is a stunning viewing experience, with users benefiting from a large screen in the form factor of a smaller model.

The Samsung using a matte-finish LCD, so screen glare is never an issue, and the rail-thin bezel surrounding it is the skinniest thing this side of the Shuriken display in Dell's XPS 14z.

The Processor

The notebook looks just like MacBook Pro comes with windows 7 Pro 64-bit, 2.2GHz Intel Core i7-2675QM quad-core processor. The speed and perfomance,is  right from the start, powered by Intel's i7 Quad Core processor.

The device automatic caching shaves 45 percent off normal boot up times and helps most used applications launch up to two times faster depending upon your PC's settings. Hence the Series 7 starts up very quickly which takes under 40 seconds to boot up, doing multitask is easy and wouldnt slow down even when running multiple HD video playing.

Storage, Memory & Battery

The device has a 8GB of DDR 3 memory on board and a massive up to 750GB hard drive. The Series 7 has very good battery life, when playing HD video  and turn the perfomance setting to macimum the battery lasts for 4 hours which is very goood most latop struggle to make three hours.

Connectivity

The Series 7 has a Radeon HD6750M graphics card, a slot-loading DVD writer drive, and a single USB 2.0 port on its right hand side. On the left edge, you'll find mini-VGA, HDMI and dual USB 3.0 ports along with a Kensington lock, 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack and a hinged RJ45 connector.

The Ethernet port is hinged to accommodate a full-sized Ethernet connector despite the laptop's skinny profile. An SD slot is on the front of the machine, and the bottom sports a woofer speaker grille, cooling vents and a removable panel that provides easy access to the machine's memory.

Camera

There is a 1.3-megapixel webcam, USB 3.0 connectivity, and make use of the Battery Life Plus technology which keeps 80% of the cell’s original capacity lasting up to 1,500 charging cycles.

The Keyboard

The keyboard seemed excellent and stretches the width of the interior, making for well-sized keys while leaving enough room for a numeric keypad. This makes typing very smooth however the keys dont go far when pressed.

The responsive keys are backlit but the inclusion of a numpad on the right-hand side does mean the keys shift to the left, so it might feel a little lopsided to some, with the left palm rest being much smaller than the right.

The touchpad uses intergrated mouse buttons which is annoying. This means yo will have to push the bottom corner to simulate left and right mouse clicks.
