Samsung Galaxy R vs. LG Optimus 2X: Affordable dual-cores

Samsung-Galaxy-R-vs-LG-Optimus-2X

Both devices are affordable and dual core. the LG Optimus 2X prides itself in being the first dual-core smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy R follows at quite some distance but runs on the same chipset - the NVIDIA Tegra 2. Both have comparable screens too: 4" of WVGA IPS LCD on the Optimus and a 4.2" WVGA SC-LCD on the Galaxy R. The Galaxy R is just a bit higher than the Galaxy W and just a bit lower than the flagship (for now) Galaxy S2 in Samsung’s line-up, so let’s call it an upper-mid-range smartphone.

The Design

1st: Galaxy R : 125 x 66 x 9.5 mm, 135g

2nd: LG Optimus 2X: 123.9 x 63.2 x 10.9mm, 139g

LG is crafted entirely out of plastic, but a very solid plastic that feels robust, compact and convincing when held in hand. Images can hardly describe the detail that largely contributes to the ergonomics of this smartphone that has a slightly curved glass covering the display. Thanks to this, the Optimus 2X feels natural when held and the slight screen curvature contributes to a more natural feeling when doing multi-touch screen gestures like pinch-to-zoom.

Most people like the device to be thinner and lighter, the Galaxy R measures 125 x 66 x 9.5 mm while the 2X is 10.9 mm thick and measures 123.9 mm lengthwise and 63.2 mm breadthwise. The weight of the phones is pretty much the same  the Galaxy R is 135 g and the 2X weighs 139 g only 4g difference. The design of Galaxy R is almost similar to Galaxy S2 but slightly thicker at 0.5mm and 20 grams heavier.

The Display

1st: Galaxy R : 4.2 Display SC-LCD touchscree, 480×800 pixels

2nd: LG Optimus 2X : 4-inc Display IPS LCD touchscreen, 480 x 800

The LG Optimus 2X's 4-inch LCD capacitive display has its good points and bad points. Undoubtedly, this is a high-quality screen with very good contrast that tolerates even direct sunlight regardless of the situation the device is used in. Similarly, the colors on the display are convincing and vibrant, be it photo imaging and video clips or simply running applications, i.e. widgets and desktop icons. The display uses IPS (in-plane switching) which puts it in direct competition with the device that's best-known for its IPS screen, the iPhone 4. Although these expectations are not met. The imaging is a bit blurry, something that is most evident when reading texts written in a smaller font size, for instance when browsing web sites.

Galaxy R has a touch screen LCD while SC-2X has the IPS LCD touchscreen. Galaxy  R has a TouchWiz UI. Both devices comes with a WVGA (480 x 800) resolution, which is not too bad.

Engine Room

1st: Galaxy R : 1Ghz dual-coreCortex-A9 processor, 1GB RAM

2nd: LG Optimus 2X : 1GHz dual-core processor NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset, 512MB RAM

Until recently, LG was lagging a little behind when it came to getting involved in the smartphone market race. The latest models, however, show that this South Korean manufacturer has finally caught up with the competition. The best proof of this is the LG Optimus 2X, with its most significant feature being the powerful NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset, with a 1GHz dual core processor.

Both phones run on 1Ghz dual-core processor however Galaxy R comes with 1GB RAM while LG Optimus 2X has 512MB RAM.

2nd: LG Optimus 2X : 1500mAh

Galaxy R has a standard battery Li-Ion 1650 mAh while the 2X has a Li-Ion power rating of the fuel with 1500 mAh. The stand by time and talk time Galaxy R is better than the Optimus 2X. However This device's battery deserves praise, as its capacity of 1500 mAh is sufficient for frequent usage for two whole days and two nights before needing to be recharged. That's definitely above average.

Connectivity

1St: LG Optimus 2X : HDMI Tv-Output, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS

2nd:Galaxy R : Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS

Operating System

1st: Galaxy R : Android  Gingerbread

2nd: LG Optimus 2X : Android Froyo

Galaxy R runs on Android. This version of the Gingerbread (v2.3.3). Android version at 2X, but v2.2 (Froyo). It can be upgraded to v2.3. The phone has a 1 GHz dual-core Cortex-A9. Enabled by ULP GeForce graphics. LG representatives have announced that an upgrade from Froyo to Gingerbread for this model should be available soon, so this potential problem should be taken care of shortly.

Conclucion

1st: Galaxy R

2nd: LG Optimus 2X

Greater and greater processor power has become an important factor with smartphones and LG has presented its first model which uses the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip. The Galaxy R is a bit more expensive but it fares well in most aspects like memory, battery, connectivity, etc. The 2X scores in camera but still Galaxy R is a better buy.
