Why I stopped using Organic Virgin Coconut oil for my hair

coconut-oil

Organic Virgin Coconut is one of the popular hair product out there. The oil is reported to have so many benefits and referred to a holy grail to our hair regiment.

The oil is claimed to moisturized your hair, help growth, anti-dandruff hair care for dry hair, hair conditioner and so on.  So I thought why not I will give a try. Behold I soon realized that this oil is not the holy grail must-have for everyone and immediately I stop using it and decided to cook with it instead. I have natural hair -African.

Reason why U stopped

Coconut oil cause Itchy scalp

I have been using organic, virgin Coconut oil for a few months. Soon after I started noticing my scalp was very Itchy. And thought to myself may be my scalp is dry so I added more coconut oil on my scalp and I ended up with more build up, what confused!!

Coconut oil game me dandruffs

I started to notice my scalp also filled with dandruff. Oo dear!  I though thought the oil act as anti-dandruff. Tried to wash with different types of shampoo but didn’t help the situation, the moment I apply the oil we are back to square one.

Dry hair and brittle

Coconut oil can penetrate inside the hair shaft due to its low molecular size, and also because it contains lauric acid which has a high affinity for hair proteins.  This can help to strengthen the hair (like protein) but it can also make the hair dry and brittle.  My hair was very oil but very dry and brittle especially on the ends.

I got very frustrated as this product has been praised and backed up by so much research and doesn’t seems to be working for me. So I stopped using the oil and after two weeks my hair stop itching, dandruff gone, hair feel moisture and soft.

Having said that, Coconut Oil isn’t for every hair type, different types of hair respond to oils differently and coconut oil won’t work for every hair type. Because it helps the hair retain its natural protein, it can be helpful for those who lack enough natural protein in hair follicles.

For those with fine to medium shiny hair will see good results from coconut oil and notice stronger, shinier hair with more volume. Those with coarse or dry hair may not struggle with low protein at all and coconut oil may lead to more brittle hair and hair loss.
